Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has defended the removal of Channels TV correspondent Chris Mofatt and his cameraman from the Government House Uyo Press Corps, asserting that the decision was made in good faith and not as a punitive measure.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The development follows public criticism after a video surfaced online showing Governor Eno advising his political appointees to brace for a possible shift from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The viral clip led to the crew’s removal and stirred controversy nationwide.

While commissioning the refurbished 14.8KM Ikot Ubo-Odot Road spanning Nsit Ubium and Nsit Atai LGAs, Governor Eno addressed the backlash, clarifying that the Channels TV crew was not sacked but simply reassigned — a move he described as routine.

“It falls under the responsibility of the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to rotate correspondents within Government House,” Eno explained. “This is standard everywhere. If someone has served at a post for up to 10 years, and the CPS decides to request a new representative, that isn’t a conflict.”

He emphasized that such decisions are within the CPS’s authority and do not necessarily require the governor’s approval. “There is no problem. Channels TV is here with us today broadcasting this event live. We maintain healthy relationships with all media organizations.”

Governor Eno reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to media partnership, acknowledging the essential role journalists play in strengthening democracy. “We consider the media as critical partners and will continue to work with them,” he said.

Sources within Government House told Vanguard that the controversy erupted after the cameraman released footage that was intended to remain private. The leak reportedly angered top officials, including the governor, and prompted swift action from the CPS, who viewed the exposure as a serious breach.
