You Held El-Rufai Hostage! – Commissioner Slams Peter Obi, Exposes Alleged Hypocrisy
Edo State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Paul Ohonbamu, has accused Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, of hypocrisy and a habitual disregard for protocol.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Ohonbamu made the statement while addressing public criticism over Governor Monday Okpebholo’s recent warning that Obi must obtain security clearance before visiting the state.
Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Monday, Ohonbamu recalled that Obi allegedly detained former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai for 48 hours during a 2013 visit to Anambra State.
“Protocol is a standard practice, and Peter Obi understands it well—he enforced it ruthlessly when he was governor. El-Rufai himself admitted he was held for 48 hours. That wasn’t just an overreach—it was a show of authoritarianism,” he said.
Ohonbamu argued that the backlash from Obi’s supporters, known as the Obidients, is both exaggerated and politically driven.
“The governor’s statement was not a threat—he merely advised that Obi inform state authorities before visiting to ensure proper security. If anything goes wrong, it is the government that gets blamed,” he explained.
He further criticized Obi’s July 7 visit to Edo, claiming it defied police warnings against public gatherings on that day.
“Other politicians follow protocol when they tour states. Why is Obi acting differently?” he asked.
The commissioner also alleged that Obi’s prior visit to Benue State was blocked by Governor Hyacinth Alia due to similar concerns over procedural disregard.
“Anyone who once detained a fellow governor for political reasons cannot claim to respect the law. That wasn’t rule of law—it was a misuse of political power,” Ohonbamu added.
He also questioned the sincerity behind Obi’s ₦15 million donation to a nursing school in Edo, suggesting it was a distraction from deeper issues.
“There’s nothing wrong with giving, but Obi’s generosity is wrapped in showmanship and hypocrisy. It creates a false sense of hope in difficult times. That’s deception, and deception is fraud—and fraud is corruption.”
Ohonbamu went on to claim that Obi’s visit triggered a stampede that allegedly resulted in at least three deaths.
“We have intelligence confirming that at least two victims were rushed to the hospital and died. We usually don’t make such things public, but this needs to be said. Every time Obi visits, there’s chaos from the crowd. The governor is simply trying to prevent further casualties.”
