ADDRESS BY PRESIDENT BOLA AHMED TINUBU AT THE LAUNCH OF THE BIOGRAPHY OF THE LATE PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI, ABUJA – MONDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2025
PROTOCOL
Today, we gather to honour the life and legacy of President Muhammadu Buhari—a man defined by quiet resolve, discipline, and a lifelong commitment to public service. As we unveil this biography, I extend the heartfelt sympathy and solidarity of the Nigerian people to Her Excellency, Aisha Buhari, her children, and grandchildren. May you take comfort in the nation’s prayers and appreciation, knowing that the Buhari name will continue to stand as a symbol of service and integrity for generations to come.
Leadership is not measured by titles held or convoys commanded, but by the values that endure when the noise fades. President Buhari leaves behind a legacy of personal integrity, simplicity, and a firm belief that public office is a sacred trust rather than an avenue for personal gain.
I speak today not only as President, but as a friend, ally, and political partner who shared a defining journey with President Buhari through moments of great challenge. Together, we forged a broad political alliance, travelled the length and breadth of our nation, and demonstrated that Nigeria could take a new direction. Our collective effort culminated in the historic 2015 victory that unseated an incumbent government and altered the course of our political history.
The coalition formed in 2014 has since evolved into the fastest-growing political party on the African continent, and its growth continues.
This biography serves as an important record of history. It honestly documents achievements and shortcomings alike, as any truthful account should. More importantly, it challenges future leaders to learn meaningful lessons rather than rely on empty rhetoric.
In reflecting on President Buhari’s enduring legacy, four pillars stand out:
Humility: He chose simplicity over extravagance, believing that self-discipline is a prerequisite for leading others. His modest lifestyle reflected a deep sense of dignity in public service.
Security: President Buhari understood that peace and safety are the foundations of national development. He invested in strengthening the armed forces, enhanced operational capacity, and pursued reforms aimed at lasting security for both the state and its people.
Vision: He appreciated the value of long-term planning—rebuilding railways, roads, airports, and bridges—while emphasising sustainability and maintenance of national infrastructure.
Social justice: He remained committed to social intervention programmes designed to protect the poor and vulnerable, ensuring that governance remained inclusive.
These pillars define his legacy. Yet, a legacy only lives on when successors choose to uphold and expand upon it. That responsibility now rests with us—as leaders and as citizens.
President Buhari’s love for Nigeria was unwavering, reflected in his daily decisions and fidelity to the oath of office. Even his critics often conceded his sincerity and honesty.
Our shared political journey reinforced a vital lesson: collaboration across differences is a strength, not a weakness. While politics may be fiercely contested, governance must remain responsible. President Buhari believed that once sworn in, service to the nation must take precedence over partisan divides. In his honour, let us pursue principled politics and results-driven leadership.
Nigeria transcends tribe, religion, language, and party affiliation. This book reminds us that a single life, lived with restraint and purpose, can inspire an entire nation. Nation-building is not the work of leaders alone, but of all citizens.
I commend the author for preserving our collective memory with diligence, balance, and depth—capturing a complex life without oversimplification.
May this book find its way into schools, libraries, and the hands of young Nigerians, guiding them as they shape their visions of leadership and service.
To my dear brother, President Muhammadu Buhari: though you have departed, your influence remains. We will honour your memory not merely in words, but through disciplined governance, compassion, and determination.
May Almighty Allah grant him mercy and admit him into Jannatul Firdaus. May He comfort his family and bless Nigeria with unity, wisdom, and peace. With faith, hard work, and collective resolve, Nigeria will endure, triumph, and prosper.
