The judiciary’s media arm, Mizan News Agency, confirmed the execution on Saturday, December 20, stating that the death sentence was carried out after being upheld by the Supreme Court and following the completion of all legal procedures.

The executed individual, identified as Aghil Keshavarz, was found guilty of espionage for what Iranian authorities refer to as the “Zionist regime,” as well as cooperating with Israeli agents and photographing sensitive military and security sites.

“The death sentence for Aghil Keshavarz, convicted of spying for the Zionist regime, collaborating with its operatives, and taking photographs of military and security installations, has been carried out after the Supreme Court confirmed the ruling and all legal processes were observed,” Mizan reported.

According to the judiciary, Keshavarz—alleged to be a Mossad agent—was arrested between April and May in Urmia, a city in northwestern Iran. During his trial, the court received his confession and detailed evidence of his activities.

Mizan outlined his alleged operations, which included photographing strategic locations, planting tracking devices, conducting opinion surveys, and analyzing traffic patterns in targeted areas, all reportedly under Mossad orders.

The execution follows the unprecedented June conflict between Iran and Israel, during which Israel launched attacks on Iranian military and nuclear sites, as well as civilian areas on June 13. Iran retaliated with drone and missile strikes, culminating in a 12-day conflict that included U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

The clashes disrupted high-level diplomatic talks between Tehran and Washington aimed at reviving the Iran nuclear deal and marked the first sustained direct confrontation between the two nations, after sporadic skirmishes in 2024. A ceasefire came into effect on June 24.

Since the war’s end, Iranian authorities have vowed swift legal action against those suspected of collaborating with Israel. Multiple arrests have been reported, and at least ten individuals accused of working with Mossad have been executed.

Iran, which does not recognize Israel, has long accused the country of orchestrating sabotage attacks on its nuclear program and assassinating Iranian scientists. In October, Tehran strengthened espionage laws, imposing harsher penalties, including asset confiscation and the death penalty, specifically targeting those accused of spying for Israel or the United States.

Previously, Iranian espionage legislation did not single out particular countries, and spying was not automatically punishable by death. The latest execution reflects Tehran’s uncompromising stance on espionage amid heightened tensions with Israel and its allies.
