The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has announced that it will press ahead with its probe into the immediate past Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Farouk Ahmed, notwithstanding the withdrawal of the petition that triggered the case.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The commission disclosed that it received a letter dated January 5, 2026, from Dr O.J. Onoja, SAN & Associates, representing billionaire industrialist Aliko Dangote, formally withdrawing the petition filed on December 16, 2025.

According to the letter, the complaint against Ahmed was withdrawn in full on the grounds that another law enforcement agency had assumed responsibility for the matter.

However, the ICPC maintained that the withdrawal would not stop its investigation. In a statement, the anti-graft agency explained that investigations had already commenced in line with Sections 3(14) and 27(3) of its establishing Act and would continue in the public interest.

“The ICPC wishes to state categorically that investigations in the interest of the Nigerian people and the Nigerian state have already commenced and are presently ongoing,” the commission said, adding that it would pursue the matter in line with its statutory mandate to promote transparency, accountability and the fight against corruption.

The petition stemmed from a high-profile disagreement in late 2025 between Dangote and Ahmed during the latter’s tenure at the NMDPRA, amid ongoing disputes between Dangote’s refinery and petroleum regulators over import policies, pricing and market control.

Dangote had accused Ahmed of corrupt enrichment, alleging that the former regulator spent over $5 million on his children’s education at elite Swiss schools—expenses he claimed were incompatible with a public official’s lawful earnings.

The allegations sparked a major public controversy and were followed by Ahmed’s resignation in December 2025, alongside the exit of the head of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC). President Bola Ahmed Tinubu subsequently nominated a new leadership for the NMDPRA.

Dangote’s original petition to the ICPC had urged the commission to arrest, investigate and prosecute Ahmed over allegations of abuse of office, corruption and living beyond his means.
