Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has explained why he opposed the expulsion of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and other members of the G5 governors by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking with journalists in Jos, the state capital, shortly after a defection rally, Mutfwang described the expulsions as ill-advised, noting that they only deepened the ongoing crisis within the main opposition party.

He said there was no prior consultation before the decision was announced, stressing that such a significant action should not have been taken unilaterally by a small group of individuals.

“I objected on principle because the decision was made surreptitiously. There was no discussion that I was part of,” he stated. “A decision of this magnitude should not be left to just a few people.”

Mutfwang added that instead of resolving the party’s internal issues, the expulsions worsened divisions and created further instability.

The expulsion targeted Wike and 11 other PDP leaders during a factional convention held at Adamasingba Stadium in Ibadan, Oyo State. They were accused of disloyalty, insubordination, and other anti-party activities.

Among those affected were former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, factional National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, National Director of Organisation Umar Bature, National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN), factional Acting Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed, factional Board of Trustees Chairman Mao Ohuabunwa, Austin Nwachukwu, George Turner, Abraham Amali, and South-South zonal leader Dan Orbih.

Mutfwang, along with Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, immediately distanced themselves from the action. In retaliation, the Wike/Anyanwu faction announced the expulsion of several other leaders, including Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, BoT Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara, factional Chairman Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, and Deputy National Chairman (South) Taofeek Arapaja.

Reflecting on the crisis, Mutfwang described the expulsions as a strategic error that plunged the PDP into deeper legal and political turmoil.

He also revealed that aside from an invitation by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), remaining in the PDP had become increasingly challenging.

“From around September, the PDP began to wobble seriously. As an insider, I realized the party had fallen into the hands of undertakers,” he said. “At that point, I had to decide whether to continue with 2027 under the PDP. I likened it to having a major appointment, like a wedding, and the vehicle you’re traveling in breaks down irreparably. You either find a mechanic or look for another vehicle.”

Mutfwang explained that, after assessing Nigeria’s political landscape, he concluded that joining the APC offered the safest and most viable platform for the 2027 elections. He dismissed other party options, saying they were unsuitable for his political ambitions.

“I conducted intelligence gathering on the state of political parties in Nigeria and determined that responding to the President’s invitation was the least risky option,” he said. “Events unfolded in ways I hadn’t anticipated, prompting me to reconsider, and after much consultation, I decided that joining the APC was the best course of action.”

The governor said he has no regrets about the move, emphasizing that the realignment will bring benefits to Plateau State.

“For me, it means greater collaboration, enhanced support, and the ability to continue the work we have started. Over the past year, I’ve enjoyed considerable cooperation with the Federal Government, and now as part of the APC family, I expect even more,” Mutfwang said.

He added, “Plateau State is emerging as the jewel of the North Central. I believe the potential here will be fully harnessed to deliver results and realize the promise we hold.”
