The strikes followed weeks of heightened US military presence in the region and led to widespread disruption of air travel across the Middle East.

In a statement posted on Telegram, Russia’s Foreign Ministry accused Washington and Tel Aviv of using concerns over Iran’s nuclear programme as a cover for pursuing regime change. The ministry warned that the attacks risk sparking a “humanitarian, economic and potentially radiological disaster” across the region.

“The responsibility for the fallout from this man-made crisis, including unpredictable consequences and escalating violence, rests entirely with them,” the statement added.

Russia Offers to Mediate

According to the ministry, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a phone conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi. During the call, Araghchi briefed Lavrov on Iran’s defensive measures and indicated that Tehran would push for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council.

Lavrov reiterated Russia’s condemnation of the strikes and expressed Moscow’s readiness to assist in facilitating dialogue and de-escalation.

Russia also described the bombing of nuclear facilities operating under International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards as “unacceptable,” placing full blame for the rising tensions on the United States and Israel.

The Foreign Ministry further criticised what it termed a pattern of destabilising actions by the US administration, accusing Washington of undermining the foundations of international law and global order.

For years, Russia has balanced its relationships in the Middle East, maintaining cordial ties with Israel while strengthening economic and military cooperation with Iran.

Some analysts in Moscow suggest that the escalating confrontation between Israel and Iran could divert global focus from the ongoing war in Ukraine and potentially reduce Western backing for Kyiv.
