Speaking on Saturday at the party’s maiden National Convention in Abuja, Dickson said no political party in Nigeria’s history had gained the level of public acceptance, enthusiasm, and support the NDC has attracted within such a short period.
He also stressed that Nigeria’s multi-party democracy must be protected, explaining that the NDC was formed after the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was allegedly weakened and its founding ideals compromised.
The former Bayelsa governor recalled that efforts to register the NDC began as far back as 2017 but were initially unsuccessful. According to him, the party later secured registration after overcoming legal and administrative obstacles through a court ruling that compelled the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to approve the party.
Dickson stated that there is currently no valid legal challenge against the NDC’s registration, noting that the deadline for appeals had elapsed and INEC, which he described as the only party with the legal standing to challenge the ruling, did not file any appeal.
He praised the judiciary for defending citizens’ constitutional rights and also commended INEC for complying with the court judgment that led to the party’s registration in February.
The NDC leader further called for the protection of opposition parties in Nigeria, insisting that democracy can only thrive when both ruling and opposition parties remain strong and active.
Dickson also welcomed former presidential candidates Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso into the party, describing their alliance with the NDC as a powerful blend of political experience, administrative capacity, national influence, and shared commitment to Nigeria’s future.
According to him, the partnership signals a major step in the party’s push to build a credible alternative platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.
