The affected schools, located in the Esinele, Yawota, and Alawusa communities, were attacked on May 15 when gunmen stormed the areas and whisked away students and teachers.

According to Punch, the abductors have presented four key demands, which include the release of two detained terrorist leaders, payment of ransom, provision of two Hilux vehicles, and the introduction of Sharia-related legal provisions.

The two individuals named in their demands are Mahmud Usman, also known as Abu Bara’a or Abbas Mukhtar, and his deputy, Abubakar Abba, also referred to as Isah Adam, Mahmud Al-Nigeri, or Mallam Mamuda.

Both men are reportedly linked to Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimeena Fii Bilaadis Sudan (Ansaru), a splinter faction of Boko Haram, which has been associated with several high-profile attacks in Nigeria, including the 2022 Kuje prison break.

Security sources indicate that the suspects were arrested between May and July 2025 and are currently standing trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Usman has already been convicted on a separate charge of illegal mining, which authorities say was used to fund weapons procurement for kidnappings and armed attacks. He remains in the custody of the Department of State Services while facing additional charges, while his deputy has pleaded not guilty and is still on trial.

The abductors are also allegedly demanding a ransom of about ₦1 billion, to be paid into an account in the Republic of Benin.
