The vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has criticised former Borno State governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, over his comments on the electoral prospects of the party’s 2027 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Northern Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Kwankwaso described Sheriff’s remarks during a Channels Television interview as disappointing, arguing that Obi had already demonstrated significant electoral appeal across the region.

He said he expected the former governor’s return to public commentary to reflect greater political insight but maintained that the interview fell short of that expectation.

Kwankwaso was responding to Sheriff’s assertion that Obi would struggle to attract substantial support from Northern voters in the 2027 presidential election.

Rejecting the claim, he argued that Sheriff could not speak on behalf of the people of the North, insisting that the region’s electorate would make its own political choices.

According to him, Obi secured about 2.8 million votes across Northern Nigeria during his first presidential contest, a performance he described as evidence of the former Anambra governor’s growing acceptance in the region.

Kwankwaso further contended that the country’s current economic challenges and public dissatisfaction with the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had strengthened the electoral prospects of what he described as the “OK Ticket”—an alliance between himself and Obi.

He noted that the combination of Obi’s previous electoral performance and his own support base in the North, where he said he polled about 1.45 million votes, would make the proposed ticket a formidable political force.

The former Kano State governor also dismissed Sheriff’s claim that Kano voters would be unwilling to support Obi, describing the people of the state as politically mature and open-minded.

He said Kano residents have consistently demonstrated confidence in the Kwankwasiyya movement and would support any credible candidates presented under its platform.

Kwankwaso also urged Sheriff to focus more on the security and humanitarian challenges facing Borno State instead of making what he described as divisive political statements during national television appearances.

According to him, the proposed Obi-Kwankwaso alliance offers Nigerians one of the strongest opportunities to reposition the country on the path of good governance, national unity and sustainable development.
