President of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN), Dr.
Tommy Okon, expressed his discontent in a conversation with reporters on Thursday. He emphasized that the government failed to engage with labour and the committee before announcing the N8,000 cash transfer to 12 million households.
As a member of the sub-committee of the Presidential Steering Committee on Cost of Governance, Okon argued that President Tinubu should have waited for the committee’s report before implementing palliatives.
He contended that declaring a state of emergency on food would have limited effects unless the escalating insecurity in the country was addressed.
Furthermore, Okon urged the government to declare a state of emergency on insecurity and tackle the transportation challenges faced by workers and citizens, given the rising costs of essential services.
The policy of cash transfer by the federal government drew criticism from Organised Labour, as it was perceived as following the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank’s template, with limited impact on the economy.
The labour group questioned the practice of borrowing money from these institutions while also accepting their advice on how to allocate funds, particularly when the approach does not contribute to the productive sector of the economy.
