This announcement was made by Gov. Uba Sani during a press conference in Kaduna on Monday. The governor explained that the recent upward surge in tuition had negatively impacted student enrollment and retention in these institutions.
Highlighting some of the new changes:
- Kaduna State University’s previous fee of N150,000 has been reduced by 30%, bringing it down to N105,000.
- Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic, which was N100,000, is now N50,000.
- The College of Education, Gidan Waya, saw a drop from N75,000 to N37,500.
- Shehu Idris College of Health Sciences and Technology, Makarfi, adjusted its Higher National Diploma (HND) course fees from N100,000 to N70,000. Meanwhile, National Diploma (ND) courses in the same school now cost N52,000, down from N75,000.
- Kaduna State College of Nursing now charges N70,000, reduced from the original N100,000.
The governor highlighted that these reductions are among the measures taken by his administration to alleviate the financial strain on residents, especially considering the economic impact of the petroleum subsidy removal.
Following a comprehensive review conducted by the heads of tertiary institutions in collaboration with the ministry of education, the findings revealed the existing tuition model was placing an undue financial burden on students. This model had been identified as the primary reason for a decline in enrollment, with many students either discontinuing their higher education or seeking alternatives. CONTINUE READING
To counteract this, Gov. Uba Sani emphasized the importance of adopting a competitive fee model that reflects current economic realities and fosters access to quality education.
The governor also reiterated his administration’s unwavering dedication to the people’s welfare, “We will consistently ensure that every child in Kaduna State has access to free, high-quality education from primary up to secondary school.”
Adding further, he mentioned the state’s continued efforts in broadening access to higher education, uplifting the quality of teaching, enhancing teacher welfare, and investing in school infrastructure. The state also places a significant emphasis on equipping students with ICT skills right from the basic education level and intensifying investments in technical and vocational education.
