Following his acquittal by the Appeal Court in Abuja, Kanu had approached the apex court to challenge the legality of his continued detention. However, the scheduled hearing was cancelled, leading to his expressed concerns.

Speaking on behalf of Nnamdi Kanu after visiting him, Ifeanyi Ejiofor questioned the government’s rationale for fearing one individual’s case in a country with a population exceeding 200 million.

Ejiofor highlighted the government’s previous actions, including the deadly raid on Kanu’s residence and his alleged abduction from Kenya.

Ejiofor asserted that the federal government’s appeal against the Court of Appeal’s judgment, which cleared Kanu and barred his further trial and detention, might not be heard due to the government’s intention to unlawfully detain him indefinitely.

He further explained, “Despite the absence of pending charges against Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, he remains detained due to an unprecedented Order of Stay of Execution, disregarding his constitutionally protected right to personal freedom.”

Ejiofor questioned the anomaly of a person being held in solitary confinement after being discharged and ordered for unconditional release by the court.

He emphasized that Kanu’s pursuit of self-determination, a globally recognized right also protected by the Nigerian Constitution and international treaties, should not result in his unjust detention.

Ejiofor concluded by challenging the federal government’s actions, asserting that if Kanu had committed any criminal offense, there would be no reluctance to prosecute him.
