Ashamu emphasized that the government will adopt a more severe stance towards individuals engaging in these criminal acts, labeling them as saboteurs hindering the determined efforts of Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration to enhance citizens’ access to essential amenities and stimulate economic activities across the state.
The commissioner urged residents to actively contribute by maintaining vigilance and promptly reporting any suspicious activities around poles, power stations, and roads to law enforcement agencies.
To facilitate reporting, he shared hotline numbers (07004449999 or 615) for informing authorities about saboteurs or malfunctioning lights.
Ashamu disclosed that the state government has approved the disbursement of N3.1 billion as an outstanding payment for the operation and maintenance of the light-up project from January 2020 to April 2023.
This action comes in response to the damages incurred by the project due to the actions of vandals, thieves, and accidents.
Reportedly, frequent accidents on major dualized roads have contributed to the project’s subpar functionality in certain areas of the state.
Ashamu highlighted a recent series of nine significant car crashes resulting from reckless driving around key locations in the Ibadan metropolis, including Akala Express Elebu, Eleyele Bus-stop, Sango-Eleyele Road, Orita Challenge Market, and New Garage.
