In anticipation of COP28 in Dubai, Governor Adeleke received a report from the Governor’s Climate Advisory Council in Osogbo and stressed the importance of bolstering states and local governments to effectively carry out climate mitigation and resilience initiatives.

He emphasized, “To make substantial progress in addressing climate change, we must strengthen and mobilize states and local governments.

My message to world leaders ahead of COP28 is to refocus their attention on states and local governments. Funding should be redirected to reach regional and local governments, while central governments oversee coordination.”

Governor Adeleke stressed the significance of prioritizing subnational entities in the fight against climate change, stating, “The battleground now lies in elevating the role of subnational entities.

If the global community genuinely aims to achieve the goals of the Paris agreements, we must focus on local action. Localization should be the guiding principle within the realm of climate action.”

He also called on world leaders to recognize the urgency of simplifying access to climate financing, addressing the challenges of inadequate funding.

He emphasized the need for greater ease of access to funding for climate adaptation projects, urging the reduction of bureaucratic barriers that hinder or deny many stakeholders access to climate finance.
