Chief Anabs Sara-Igbe, the National Coordinator of the South-South Leadership Forum, revealed in a recent interview with Channels Television that certain leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) played a pivotal role in preventing the resignation of the Governor of Rivers State. The potential resignation stemmed from escalating tensions between the governor and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Sara-Igbe, a former spokesperson for the Pan-Niger Delta Forum, disclosed that Governor Fubara was experiencing challenges in managing the state’s funds and governance due to Wike’s dominating influence within the cabinet. Even after leaving office, Wike continued to exert influence over government operations, complicating the governor’s ability to govern independently.
According to Sara-Igbe, Fubara contemplated resigning due to the constraints on his autonomy and the difficulties in managing state resources. The intervention of key PDP leaders in the state, however, persuaded him to reconsider his decision.
Sara-Igbe went on to criticize Wike’s emphasis on political structures, citing a decline in internally generated revenue from N10bn to N6bn during Wike’s tenure. The former governor’s allocation of funds from the federation account to specific projects further strained the financial resources available for general governance.
Highlighting the tension between Wike and the governor, Sara-Igbe expressed concern about the governor’s ability to govern effectively without sufficient resources. He emphasized that PDP elders intervened to prevent a messy situation resulting from the governor’s potential resignation.
Sara-Igbe concluded by offering advice to Wike, urging him to allow the governor the freedom to govern independently, drawing parallels with instances where political leaders and their successors had ideological differences but maintained respect for each other’s roles.
Additionally, Sara-Igbe noted Wike’s awareness of the defection of 27 PDP Assembly lawmakers to the APC, emphasizing the legal consequences that such a move could have on the Assembly members’ seats.
