In a press statement issued after a medical visit in the UK, where she is currently residing, Alison-Madueke disclosed her battle with Stage 2 cancer. She acknowledged her past mistakes, seeking forgiveness from both President Bola Tinubu and the Nigerian public.

Admitting to financial misconduct during her time as Petroleum Minister, Alison-Madueke’s statement read, “Yes, no one is flawless. Sometimes, God Almighty permits such occurrences. I’ve been accused of financial misconduct during my tenure, and it’s true. However, I would like President Bola Tinubu and Nigerians to forgive me, allow me to return home, and contribute because life is transient.”

The former minister also claimed knowledge of misappropriated funds and expressed readiness to disclose details upon her return, stating, “I am ready to return and confess everything,” including specific information about funds entrusted to Dauda Lawal Dare, the current governor of Zamfara State.

Alison-Madueke’s statement shed light on her past association with Governor Dare, alleging that she entrusted him with over $9 billion while he served as the Executive Director of First Bank Nigeria PLC.

Currently facing legal proceedings in the UK for separate bribery allegations, Alison-Madueke’s hearing in the Westminster Magistrates Court in London was adjourned. This case involves her alleged acceptance of a £100,000 bribe, while the UK’s National Crime Agency continues its investigation into suspicions of multi-million-pound bribery for oil and gas contracts.

Additionally, the Nigerian government is actively seeking her extradition. The Attorney-General of the Federation submitted a warrant of arrest and extradition request to UK authorities, while the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) aims to bring her back to face 13 counts of money laundering charges.
