Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, to trim down the 2024 National Assembly budget, currently set at N344.85 billion. SERAP criticized the arbitrary escalation of the 2024 budget by the National Assembly, contending that a reduction is essential to avoid exacerbating the country’s debt crisis. The organization urged the National Assembly to request President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to submit a revised supplementary appropriation bill reflecting a decreased allocation for the National Assembly.

The group raised concerns over specific allocations within the budget, questioning the rationale behind budgeting N225 million for the National Assembly E-Library, allocating N3 billion for books in the National Assembly Library, and designating a ‘take-off grant’ of N12.1 billion for the National Assembly Library.

SERAP asserted that the N344.48 billion National Assembly budget represents a significant violation of the Nigerian Constitution and the nation’s international human rights obligations. The organization highlighted that the new budgetary allocation constitutes over 70% of the N197 billion proposed by President Bola Tinubu in the initial budget proposal submitted to the National Assembly.

This development occurred shortly after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the N28.7 trillion 2024 budget into law. Notably, the lawmakers had previously increased the proposed N27.5 trillion 2024 budget to N28.7 trillion. SERAP’s call for a reduction underscores concerns about the fiscal responsibility and financial prudence of the National Assembly in the face of the country’s economic challenges.
