In an internal memo from the CBN, it was revealed that the decongestion action plan aims to align the bank’s structure with its functions, redistribute skills for a more even geographical spread, and comply with building safety standards. The plan involves moving 1,533 staff to other CBN facilities within Abuja, Lagos, and understaffed branches. The Federal Government has also officially announced the relocation of FAAN’s headquarters from Abuja to Lagos, raising concerns among various stakeholders.

AYCF President General, Alhaji Yerima Shettima, expressed apprehension over the potential consequences of these relocations. He highlighted the risks of undermining national unity, disrupting operations, causing economic setbacks, and perpetuating regional imbalances. Shettima argued that Abuja was strategically chosen as the capital to promote national unity and decentralize power. Any agenda tampering with this arrangement, he asserted, would be fiercely resisted by the northern region.

Shettima expressed disappointment in the perceived silence of the Northern elite regarding these relocations, emphasizing that they should not remain quiet when the political and economic viability of the region is at stake. He called on well-meaning Nigerians to speak out against what he termed emerging arbitrariness and urged relevant authorities to reconsider the relocations in light of the potential harm to Abuja’s status as the capital city.

The AYCF reaffirmed its commitment to promoting unity and development in Northern Nigeria and the nation as a whole. It vowed to continue advocating for the preservation of Abuja’s status as the capital city and to resist any attempts that might undermine national unity.
