The new charges accused Emefiele of forgery, conferring a corrupt advantage, and criminal breach of trust, among other offenses. The Federal Government had initially filed 19 charges related to procurement fraud, later reduced to six. The amended charge accused Emefiele of obtaining $6.2 million through false pretenses by misrepresenting the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, violating the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud-Related Offenses Act.

The charges also implicated Emefiele in conspiring with Eric Ocheme, who remains at large, to commit forgery. They allegedly agreed to forge a document titled “Presidential directive on foreign election observer missions” dated January 26, 2023. Additionally, Emefiele was accused of conferring a corrupt advantage on his wife, Omoile Margret, and brother-in-law, Omoile Macombo, by awarding a contract for the renovation of the CBN Governor’s residence in Lagos to the tune of N99.8 million.

Emefiele’s defense counsel, Matthew Bukka, expressed gratitude to the trial judge for granting bail and emphasized their commitment to facing trial on the amended charges. The case was adjourned to February 12 and 13, 2024, for the commencement of the trial.
