Tragically, numerous young individuals have met untimely ends, lost businesses, and faced dire consequences due to gambling addiction. In a harrowing incident, a 31-year-old man named Chukwuma Onoh took his own life in Abia State, reportedly driven by the loss of N2.5 million in a bet. Onoh had borrowed N1.2 million from friends, combining it with his N1.3 million to place a bet, only to face defeat. Consumed by despair, he ingested a lethal substance and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
In a similar heart-wrenching tale from Ogun State in May 2023, Samuel Adegoke, a student of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, resorted to suicide after losing not only his school fee but also that of his colleague in a gambling mishap. The ND2 student of Electrical Electronic Engineering drank a fatal substance, his despair escalating as the semester examinations approached.
Another distressing incident involved Dennis Akige, a 200 level student of the University of Abuja, who ended his life after losing his school fee to gambling in Peyi, Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, in January 2023. Despite being the son of a pastor, Dennis succumbed to shame and desperation, choosing to drink a lethal dose of sniper.
The dangerous allure of virtual sports, electronic games governed by random number generators, has contributed significantly to the rise of gambling-related tragedies. The randomness of results provides an illusion of chance, fostering addiction. Sport betting and other forms of gambling are legally sanctioned in Nigeria since the enactment of the National Lottery Act in 2005. However, the involvement of underage individuals has raised serious concerns.
The heartbreaking story of Mrs. Josephine Udeh highlights the pervasive nature of gambling addiction, as her son Godwin succumbed to the allure of betting from a young age. Despite interventions and attempts at deliverance through spiritual means, Godwin remains ensnared by the grip of gambling, impacting his life in various detrimental ways.
Notably, while gambling wreaks havoc on individuals and families, it serves as a lucrative source of revenue for the government. KPMG reported in 2016 that a prominent sports betting platform in Nigeria boasted a monthly turnover of $10 million, underscoring the immense financial stakes involved. The Nigerian government reportedly reaps over 730 billion naira annually from the gaming industry, highlighting the complex and intertwined dynamics of this societal issue.
