Nwachi was apprehended on February 15, 2023, in Abuja and subsequently brought before the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Maitama, in March, facing accusations related to internet fraud.
In a statement released on February 14, 2024, the EFCC disclosed that the victim, Nicole Kierulff Sayers, claimed that the accused deceived her into a fictitious marriage and unlawfully extracted her savings. The agency presented Okanne Kelechi, the Second Prosecution Witness (PW2), who testified on February 13, 2024, before Justice U.P. Kekemeke of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Maitama, Abuja.
The EFCC statement affirmed, “PW2, Okanne Kelechi, revealed to Justice U.P Kekemeke that the EFCC has successfully recovered the sum of $13,204.00 from Nwachi Chidozie Kingsley, who is currently being prosecuted for defrauding an American, Nicole Kierulff Sayers, of $370,000 in a concocted marriage.”
The recovered assets include a plot of land situated in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, and two vehicles – a Lexus Ex 350 and a Toyota Venza.
During the trial, Kelechi, led in evidence by the prosecution counsel, Fatsuma Muhammad, disclosed that incriminating evidence against the defendant included various fraudulent profiles on LinkedIn, which Nwachi admitted creating. Additionally, a counterfeit contract award letter was discovered on his phone, which he had sent to the American victim, falsely claiming that the contract was awarded to him by the Federal government.
The investigation involved reaching out to the Forensic Department of the EFCC, various local banks, and the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing. A response from the Ministry revealed that the contract award letter was not authentic. The defendant acknowledged sending similar fake letters to Sayers and other foreign victims.
The evidence presented against the accused included a certificate of identification, notice of nominal complaint with copies of intent to award a contract, and an iPhone 11Pro Max. In response to the gathered evidence, the defendant’s legal team proposed a plea bargain.
“We recovered $13,204, Lexus Ex350, and Toyota Venza,” stated Kelechi. Justice Kekemeke adjourned the trial until April 30, 2024, for further proceedings.
