The Defense Headquarters’ appointed Board of Inquiry, tasked with investigating the tragic events of March 14th resulting in the loss of 17 soldiers in Okuama, Delta State, is slated to commence its proceedings today in Warri.

Chairing the board, Air Vice Marshal David Ajayi, emphasized to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori in Warri that their primary objective is to gather factual information without assigning blame.

“We are here to collect information from various stakeholders including security agencies, community leaders, and residents,” he stated. “This comprehensive report will facilitate constructive communication, bolster civil-military relations, and promote the revival of economic activities in the affected areas.”

However, leaders from Okuama expressed their reluctance to participate in the inquiry. One leader cited the ongoing displacement of Okuama residents, making it impractical for them to attend such meetings due to safety concerns.

Echoing this sentiment, Ejedegba Innocent, the community’s legal representative prior to the incident, confirmed Okuama’s decision not to engage in the proceedings.

Conversely, a representative from the Okoloba community, entangled in a land dispute with Okuama, stated their intention to cooperate with the inquiry.

The panel is scheduled to convene in the morning, followed by discussions with Okoloba community leaders in the afternoon. Subsequently, the inquiry will reconvene in Bayelsa State on Friday to address the matter further.
