This development follows the recent suspension of Eze Kanu Nwa Kanu, the traditional ruler of Ibom Isii autonomous community in Arochukwu LGA, over alleged abuse of office.
The Board of Inquiry, chaired by retired Justice Igbo Akomas with Mrs. Gold Dynoh as the Secretary, was inaugurated in Umuahia on Friday by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Uzor Nwachukwu.
Commissioner Nwachukwu, while addressing the gathering, outlined the terms of reference for the Board, which include summoning and questioning the implicated traditional rulers, providing recommendations to Governor Alex Otti, and evaluating suitable sanctions.
The commissioner emphasized that the State government’s actions were not driven by a witch-hunt but aimed at preserving the integrity of the traditional institution.
Nwachukwu specified that the Board is expected to submit its findings within three weeks. The additional members of the Board of Inquiry are Eze Linus Mba, Eze Nelson Nmerengwa, and Mrs. Nkechi Ikechi.
In response, the Board’s Chairman expressed gratitude to the Governor for entrusting them with the task, assuring that the assignment would be conducted diligently in adherence to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The suspension of Eze Kanu has been met with opposition from his kinsmen and supporters, who staged a solidarity march asserting that the suspension amounted to interference in their culture.
They contended that the decision was unduly harsh and lacked a fair hearing for the monarch.
