Justice Angela Otaluka, presiding over the case, acknowledged that the deceased’s actions, including throwing her husband’s food and hurling a stone at his car, were provocative. However, she interpreted Makanjuola’s act of reversing his car as a loss of emotional control rather than a deliberate retaliation.

Justice Angela emphasized that the prosecution failed to prove the defendant’s intent but succeeded in establishing the offense of culpable homicide. Consequently, she found Makanjuola guilty of culpable homicide not punishable by death and sentenced him to four years in prison.

In his defense, Makanjuola’s counsel, Kolade Adeboyega, portrayed him as a responsible individual who had plans to reunite with his wife and children before the unfortunate incident. Adeboyega pleaded with the court to consider the well-being of the children, who were currently under their grandmother’s care.
