Governor Diri announced his defection on Wednesday during an expanded State Executive Council meeting held in Yenagoa, which was attended by the Speaker of the Bayelsa House of Assembly, Abraham Ngobere, his deputy, Micheal Ogbere, and several lawmakers.

He declared, “Today, I wish to address a matter that has generated much speculation and debate across party lines in Bayelsa State and beyond. After extensive consultations, I, Governor Douye Diri, hereby resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party.”

Diri emphasized that he was not leaving the PDP alone, saying, “I am here with the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and all members of our party in the Assembly who stand with me on this decision. Therefore, today, I have officially resigned from the PDP for very obvious reasons.”

However, conspicuously absent from the meeting was his deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, whose name was also missing from Diri’s defection speech.

Sources within the PDP revealed that Ewhrudjakpo intentionally stayed away from the meeting, displeased that he was not consulted before the governor’s decision to defect. His continued loyalty to former Governor Seriake Dickson, a staunch PDP member, is also said to be influencing his stance.

Insiders disclosed that Diri is unlikely to pressure his deputy into defecting, as such a move could further heighten political tension in the state.

Meanwhile, former Governor Seriake Dickson and his allies in the National Assembly have reaffirmed their commitment to remaining in the PDP.

Additionally, three Bayelsa Assembly lawmakers—Godless Oyinke (Sagbama 1), Wisdom Fafi (Kolokuma/Opokuma 2), and Ted Elemeforo (Yenagoa III and Deputy Chief Whip)—have also declined to join the governor in defecting to the APC.
