Human rights activist Femi Falana has announced his intention to seek compensation for minors who were detained during the #EndBadGovernance protests. Falana, serving as legal counsel for the detained youths, spoke to reporters shortly after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ordered their release.

According to Naija News, these minors are part of a group of 76 individuals charged with treasonable felony in connection with the protests that took place from August 1 to 10. During a court hearing on Friday, they were granted bail set at ₦10 million each and were remanded until the bail conditions are met.

In his comments, Falana stated, “We will wait until the case is withdrawn tomorrow, and then we will discuss with the defendants what actions they wish to take before we proceed with our application. We are hopeful that the matter will be withdrawn tomorrow (Tuesday).”

Falana previously submitted a notice of preliminary objection, requesting that the judge decline jurisdiction in this case and issue an order requiring the complainant to cover the children’s school fees until at least the completion of their secondary education or university studies.

He emphasized that this application is supported by “Section 18 (3) (a) (b) (c) of the 1999 Constitution, Section 15 of the Child’s Rights Act, Section 2 of the Universal Basic Education Act, and Article 17 of the African Charter.”

Falana argued that the Federal High Court does not have the jurisdiction to hear the case under “Section 251 of the 1999 Constitution,” insisting that according to “Section 204 of the Child’s Rights Act,” the minors should be handled by the child justice system.
