Subsequently, the military regime detained Bazoum and even issued a death threat against the political leader.
In a Twitter announcement made on Monday morning, the AU disclosed that their Peace and Security Council was convened to discuss the situation in Niger and devise strategies to manage it.
The AU’s tweet read: “AU’s Peace & Security Council meets to receive an update on the evolution of the situation in Niger and the efforts to address it.”
This session is taking place at the AU headquarters located in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.
Key attendees include the AU Commission Chief, Moussa Faki Mahamat, alongside representatives from Niger and the West African bloc ECOWAS.
It’s worth noting that just last week, Faki expressed “deep concern” about the reported harsh conditions of Bazoum’s detention, deeming his treatment by coup leaders “unacceptable.”
On Sunday, Niger’s military regime announced their intention to prosecute Bazoum, who was democratically elected, for “high treason,” and also criticized ECOWAS for imposing sanctions on the nation.
Bazoum, aged 63, and his family have been confined to the official presidential residence in Niamey since the coup took place.
