The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is set to evaluate its mobilization efforts across various zones in preparation for an impending nationwide strike. The union, represented across its branches, has issued a three-week ultimatum to the Federal Government regarding several unresolved issues.
Key concerns include conditions of service as stipulated in the FGN/ASUU MoU 2012/2013 and the MoA of 2017. These issues encompass the illegal dissolution of Governing Councils in both Federal and State Universities, the release of outstanding salaries totaling three and a half months, and the settlement of unpaid salaries for members on sabbatical or adjunct roles due to IPPIS deficiencies. Additionally, ASUU demands the release of third-party deductions by IPPIS, the payment of Earned Academic Allowance, the implementation of visitation Panels’ reports, and the adoption of UTAS to replace IPPIS.
Recently, the government had initiated plans to utilize the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS) for the payment of salaries to lecturers in federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
A member of ASUU’s National Executive Council, speaking anonymously in Abuja, expressed disappointment with the government’s handling of the situation, remarking on its prolonged neglect of their concerns. Following the ongoing mobilization, the NEC plans to assess these actions and formally decide on their next steps.
