The photos, which have gone viral across social media, triggered debate after some users questioned their authenticity. In response, UNICEF said the images were taken more than 18 years ago during a charity photoshoot involving Messi, Yamal and Yamal’s mother, Sheila.
In a statement, UNICEF said:
“Yes, the photos circulating online are real. More than 18 years ago, a baby named Lamine Yamal and his mother Sheila met Lionel Messi during a UNICEF fundraising photoshoot.”
The organisation noted that both players have since become global football stars and currently serve as UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors, using their influence to advocate for children’s rights and wellbeing.
UNICEF added that the photographs were taken by Spanish photographer Joan Monfort, who captured the moment during a charity calendar project designed to raise funds for the organisation. The images show a young Messi carefully bathing infant Yamal in a small plastic tub.
The photographs recently resurfaced amid Yamal’s meteoric rise with FC Barcelona and the Spain national football team, surprising many fans who were unaware that the teenage star had appeared alongside Messi as a baby.
The story has attracted even more attention because both Messi and Yamal are now UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors. Their unexpected connection has prompted fresh reactions online, with many supporters describing the photos as a symbolic link between two generations of football greats.
Interest in the images has intensified further ahead of Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final, where Argentina national football team are scheduled to face Spain national football team.
