During the press conference, Akande addressed the criticism he faced, stating, “I have no apology for saying the truth. Everything I wrote in my book is true, and none has ever come out to challenge me.” He also recounted a dismissive remark from a pressman who admitted to not reading the book but deemed it bad, to which Akande responded by encouraging others to read and form their opinions.
Shifting the discussion to the political landscape, Akande expressed his perspective on governance, particularly praising the 1960 constitution as the best. According to him, the system rewarded legislators based on attendance, providing sitting allowances. He contrasted this with the military era, suggesting that the introduction of salaries during their rule marked a departure from the effective functioning of the legislative system.
Akande also shared his views on the current state of Nigeria, attributing certain societal issues to a lack of work ethic among the populace. He criticized the mindset that seeks prosperity without a corresponding commitment to hard work. Akande pointed out the prevalence of criminal activities like kidnapping and fraud, placing responsibility on the Nigerian people rather than solely on leaders. He argued that the mindset, fostered by political parties like the PDP and perpetuated since the military era, has contributed to a culture of expecting miracles from leaders without individual effort.
In conclusion, Akande suggested that the quality of leadership in Nigeria is influenced by the readiness of the people to work and contribute positively to society. He asserted, “The Nigerian followers don’t deserve good leaders” if they continue to rely on leaders for solutions without a willingness to work for the betterment of the nation.
