Chief Akande expressed concern that many Nigerian graduates are unable to contribute meaningfully to the country’s economy. He emphasized the importance of skill acquisition as a key focus in education.

Speaking at his residence in Ila-Orangun, Osun State, during a visit by the Vice Chancellor of Ekiti State University (EKSU), Professor Babatola Ayodele, and other senior university officials, Akande called for a major overhaul of the nation’s educational system.

“If we want to compete globally, we cannot afford to wait. Universities must stop producing graduates who cannot contribute to the economy,” Akande stated.

He added, “Going to school is not work; it is merely the beginning of learning how to work,” stressing the urgency of adapting to global standards in order to avoid falling behind.

The EKSU Alumni recognized the university’s recent achievement of being named the best state university in Nigeria by Times Higher Education, attributing this success to strong leadership.

Professor Ayodele, who led the delegation, described the visit as an opportunity to seek guidance from the elder statesman. He emphasized that skill acquisition is essential for graduates to remain globally competitive.

“No student should graduate from the university without acquiring relevant skills in a particular vocation,” he said, adding that this prepares students for meaningful careers, rather than just seeking traditional white-collar jobs, as reported by Leadership.
