The President of the Senate, Goodwill Akpabio, asserted on Monday that the National Assembly’s increase in the 2024 Budget from N27.5 trillion to N28.78 trillion is thoroughly justified. Expressing satisfaction with the budget approval process, Akpabio commended the collaborative efforts of the National Assembly and emphasized the importance of the increased budget allocation for the betterment of the nation. He noted the President’s acknowledgment of the National Assembly’s dedication to promptly handling the budget and outlined the verifiable justifications for the incremental budget adjustment.

Akpabio assured the public that the National Assembly will closely collaborate with the executive branch to oversee the effective implementation of the budget. He emphasized the significance of returning to the January to December budget cycle, commending President Tinubu for prioritizing this critical national task even during a public holiday.

In addition, Akpabio disclosed that the leadership of the National Assembly has instructed all committees to commence their work promptly. The President highlighted the need for monthly reports from ministers or government agencies, with consequences for those found lacking in their responsibilities.

Akpabio also detailed the joint efforts of both chambers of the National Assembly to ensure the timely passage of the budget and emphasized their commitment to joint monitoring to prevent discrepancies between the two chambers.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, provided additional insights into the bills signed by President Tinubu, including the extension of the supplementary appropriation bill of 2023 by 90 days. Abbas highlighted the concurrent operation of the 2023 main budget with the capital component of the 2024 budget until March 31, 2024. Another notable achievement was the approval of the securitization of ways and means, signaling an end to controversial borrowing methods.

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, emphasized that the immediate focus is on the implementation of the N28.78 trillion budget. Edun expressed optimism that the budget would inspire investors and benefit various sectors, fostering overall economic development.
