The hosts looked firmly in control early on, taking the lead midway through the first half through Japanese defender Hiroki Ito. The centre-back rose highest to power home a header from Michael Olise’s corner in the 23rd minute, an assist that extended Olise’s league-leading tally to 14 for the season.
Despite the advantage, Bayern showed rare defensive vulnerability. Augsburg nearly equalised just before half-time when Robin Fellhauer’s thunderous strike smashed against the frame of the goal.
The visitors continued to press after the restart. Bayern escaped again when Elvis Rexhbecaj blazed over from close range, but the warning signs soon turned into punishment. With 15 minutes left on the clock, Arthur Chaves capitalised on uncertainty in Bayern’s defence, muscling past goalkeeper Jonas Urbig to meet a corner and head into an empty net for the equaliser.
Urbig, making a rare start after Manuel Neuer was rested as part of Vincent Kompany’s squad rotation, endured a difficult outing and struggled to assert authority in his penalty area.
The decisive blow came nine minutes from time. Augsburg, who had lost all eight of their league matches this season after conceding first, rewrote the script as Han-Noah Massengo finished off a slick passing move to complete a remarkable turnaround and stun the home supporters.
Bayern pushed desperately for a late response, but Augsburg held firm. Michael Olise came agonisingly close with the final kick of the game, rattling the crossbar with a long-range effort. Harry Kane, unusually quiet, was unable to spark the late rally that has so often rescued Bayern this season.
Despite the shock defeat, Bayern remain in a commanding position at the top of the table, holding an 11-point lead over second-placed Borussia Dortmund, though they have played one game more.
For Augsburg, the victory proved vital in their survival fight, lifting them to 13th place and four points clear of the relegation play-off zone.
