According to an anonymous police source from the Awkuzu command, the victim, Chinedu Chima, approached Awu Igbeke at his sawmill in Nsugbe, demanding the repayment of a N30,000 debt. Instead of settling the financial obligation, Awu Igbeke, assisted by accomplices, led Chima into a dense forest in Nsugbe. There, they attacked him with a machete, robbed him of personal belongings, and, in a gruesome act, severed three fingers from his right hand while also injuring his left hand.
Following the incident, Awu Igbeke went on the run, prompting the police to declare him wanted. The manhunt continued for three months until two weeks ago when the suspect was tracked down. Currently, he is in custody at the State Criminal Investigations Department, CID Annex.
The police source narrated, “To emphasize the extent of his anger, the suspect collected the cut-off fingers, pocketed them, and fled to Obigbo in Rivers State.”
Victor Alo, Chairman of the Abakaliki Lawyers Association, condemned Awu Igbeke’s actions as wicked, barbaric, and inhuman. He assured that the association would collaborate with Chima’s family members to pursue the case to its logical conclusion, ensuring that justice prevails. Alo commended the state police command for their diligence in apprehending the suspect and urged swift action in arresting any remaining accomplices.
Despite attempts to contact the state police spokesman, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, for confirmation, there was no response to calls and inquiries at the time of reporting.
