The FCT chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) issued a directive on Sunday, instructing primary school teachers to commence an indefinite strike from January 15. This strike is a continuation of a previous one suspended by the union in 2023 due to issues such as the non-payment of a 40% Peculiar Allowance and 25 months of minimum wage arrears.
Although the NUT had temporarily halted the strike on October 2, 2023, to allow for the resolution of the outstanding issues within six weeks, no progress was made. The minister now attributes the prolonged strike to the Chairmen and implores them to be more proactive in fulfilling their responsibilities.
Wike clarified, “Recently, the NUT has embarked on a strike; it is not our fault, it is the Councils’ Chairmen’s fault because primary schools are under the purview of the area councils. Again, it may appear as if the ministers are inactive, but that is not within our responsibility.”
Despite emphasizing that they cannot afford to be passive observers to the ongoing strike, Wike stated that he had invited the striking teachers for a meeting to address and resolve the underlying problems. “Council Chairmen should recognize that they must rise to their responsibilities,” the minister added.
