“Many state governors are already grappling with the current 30,000 minimum wage. How feasible is it for them to manage salaries exceeding 60,000 and beyond?” Eneji queried, questioning the feasibility for both state and local governments.

Eneji criticized the labour movement for what he perceived as a lack of consideration for the majority of Nigerians, particularly those in rural areas and outside formal employment sectors. He urged for a more balanced approach, warning that unilateral wage hikes could exacerbate inflation and unemployment rates.

“An increase in minimum wage might prompt multinationals and state government agencies to downsize, unable to sustain higher wage bills,” Eneji added, forecasting dire consequences for state economies and infrastructure if a significant portion of revenue goes solely towards salaries.

In conclusion, NCCC urged for a comprehensive review of the proposed wage increase, stressing the need for broader economic implications to be factored into the negotiations for a sustainable solution beneficial to all Nigerians.
