Comrade Abubakar J. Abdullahi, Chairman of the Kaduna Polytechnic Chapter of ASUP, provided an update following the Union’s 111th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on October 6, 2024, in Abuja. He expressed frustration with the federal government’s slow response and lack of urgency in addressing the union’s concerns, noting that some agreements have remained unresolved since 2010.
“It’s crucial for the public to understand that these agreements are designed to enhance working conditions and foster a better environment for teaching, learning, skill acquisition, and research,” Abdullahi stated. He added that the NEC decided to issue the ultimatum only after exhausting nearly all avenues for resolution.
The union has instructed local chapters and zones to prepare for protests, media campaigns, and other peaceful actions during this period, hoping the government will address the issues to avert a shutdown of polytechnics nationwide.
The NEC also called for an immediate reassessment of decisions made by the government and relevant bodies that contradict the Federal Polytechnics Act (Amended) 2019. Key demands include the resolution of CONTISS-15 migration arrears for lower cadre staff, the resumption of negotiations on the ASUP-Federal Government agreement from 2010, and the prompt release of updated conditions of service for the polytechnic sector.
Abdullahi urged the swift implementation of promotions and payment of accumulated promotion arrears in both state-owned and federal institutions.
