Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, the President described the occasion as a tribute to “a distinguished Nigerian, an elder statesman, and an accomplished public servant who has dedicated his life to the service of the nation and community.”
In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the SGF on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, Tinubu highlighted that Chief George’s invitation reflected the enduring bonds that unite Lagosians and Nigerians across the country. The President emphasized that while political actors may often disagree, the values that bind Nigerians are far stronger than partisan divisions.
“The event today has shown that, as politicians, we can debate passionately and hold opposing views, yet the principles that unite us as a people remain stronger than what separates us,” Tinubu said. He acknowledged the longstanding political differences between himself and Chief George since 1999 but stressed that mutual respect and a shared commitment to Nigeria’s progress have endured.
The President commended Chief George for his valuable contributions to national discourse and reflected on his 80-year journey as a testament to resilience and divine grace. He humorously recalled the celebrant’s earlier remarks about considering exile if Tinubu became President, and assured that collaboration and unity remained their common goal.
On the newly unveiled memoir, Tinubu praised it as a comprehensive account of Chief George’s early life, military service, tenure as Military Governor of old Ondo State, leadership at the Nigerian Ports Authority, and political engagements. He expressed confidence that the book would serve as an important resource on leadership, public service, and governance.
President Tinubu pledged his support for the book, encouraging attendees to acquire copies for personal and institutional libraries, and concluded by wishing Chief George continued health and many more years of service to God and humanity.
