Gloria Okon, a 35-year-old lady, was nabbed by the National Security Organization (NSO) at the Aminu Kano International Airport on April 22, 1985. The charge? Smuggling substances suspected to be heroin and other kinds of hard drugs. As she was about to leave Nigeria for England, the officials discovered 56.70 grammes of the substances, 301 dollars, 60 pounds sterling, N20,000, and 19,000 Italian lira in her possession.

The news of Okon’s arrest created ripples in both local and international media. The reason? Decree no. 20 of the then Buhari military regime had declared anyone caught with hard drugs punishable by death. However, Okon’s story takes a tragic turn. The medical report cited food poisoning as the cause of her sudden death.

A customs officer who had kept Okon in custody revealed that she had requested rice and beans on the day of her arrest. Shortly after the meal, she fell ill and died. Her interrogations had proved fruitless; her only clue, a single name ‘Bassey‘, led the investigation to a dead end.
Adding to the mystery, none of Okon’s relatives showed up to claim her corpse. With no concrete conclusion, rumors and speculations started brewing in the Nigerian public sphere. Some believed that Okon was a close associate of the first lady, Mariam Babangida, and her death was orchestrated to protect the secrets she might spill.
The web of conspiracy and secrets thickened when, after Babangida replaced Buhari in power, Gani Fawehinmi, a prominent Nigerian lawyer, sought to reopen the Okon case. However, he met a stone wall in the forms of Haliru Akilu and Kunle Togun, top security agents of Babangida.
Then comes the explosive twist in the tale. The renowned investigative journalist, Dele Giwa, discovered that Okon was alive and had given birth in London. He had obtained photographs of Okon at the naming ceremony of her baby, with none other than Maryam Babangida present at the event. Eager to get to the bottom of the mystery, Giwa received a parcel, purportedly from “Mr. President”, which exploded on opening and led to his untimely demise.
With Giwa’s death and the unsolved case of Gloria Okon, a dark cloud of speculation, conspiracy, and mystery continues to hover over Nigeria’s political history, with the enigmatic figure of General Ibrahim Babangida at its epicenter. Yet, the truth remains shrouded in the dark corridors of power, and the mysterious case of Gloria Okon and the tragic death of Dele Giwa remain unanswered riddles in Nigeria’s political saga.
