The National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rauf Aregbesola, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to embrace greater transparency in its operations.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking in Abuja on Monday at a panel session themed “Innovation in Electoral Technology 2015–2025”, the former Osun State Governor argued that Nigeria must reform the process of appointing the INEC Chairman.

Aregbesola warned that placing enormous power in the hands of a single individual to control the commission and determine election outcomes is dangerous for democracy.

He further admitted that he had once benefited from what he described as “election shenanigans” but insisted that the system must be reformed to ensure free, fair, and credible polls.

Quoting Joseph Stalin, Aregbesola noted:
“Stalin cynically said that voters do not matter as much as the man who announces the results. I can tell you clearly, I have benefited from election shenanigans before. But if we do not change the process of who manages the electoral body — to reduce the control of one person dictating everything — we are only joking with our democracy.”

Concerns Over INEC and BIVAS

The former Minister of Interior also challenged INEC to be more open about the technologies it deploys during elections, particularly the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BIVAS).

According to him, the commission is hiding too many details from Nigerians, contrary to legal provisions that require it to demonstrate the electoral technology before deployment.

He said:
“INEC must properly present and physically demonstrate the technology it intends to use. Don’t tell Nigerians you are using BIVAS for one election and then change the system on election day. That is abracadabra.

“The law compels INEC to show the public how elections will be conducted. This will enforce standard procedures and prevent surprises on election day.”
