Dewabi highlighted the persistence of outstanding entitlement issues faced by pensioners, expressing concern about the increasing backlog and its negative impact on their well-being. He pointed out that the Salaries and Wages Commission had formulated a table for the payment of the new national minimum wage for pensioners, a responsibility endorsed by the former president. However, PTAD allegedly overruled this table, creating disruptions by introducing its own payment structure.

The president questioned the oversight role of the supervising Minister/Ministry in addressing PTAD’s actions, which he described as operating like a parallel government. Dewabi also raised concerns about the lack of reaction or corrective measures from the Offices of the Head of Service and Secretary of the Federal Government regarding these anomalies. He emphasized that various groups had previously highlighted these issues, and the ongoing non-action could be perceived as an endorsement of PTAD’s poor handling of pensioners’ affairs.

Dewabi further called attention to the responsibility of the Office of the Auditor General for the Federation in auditing the allocation and disbursement of funds for federal offices. He questioned the status of the pensioners’ accounts, especially considering the reported 55 1/2 months of being shortchanged as of November 2023. The president sought clarification on how deductions and funds collected during this period were treated – whether as revenue or an unspent balance. This underscores the need for transparency and accountability in managing pensioners’ finances and addressing the discrepancies introduced by PTAD.
