The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, announced the approval on Friday during a working visit to the institution. He revealed that President Tinubu swiftly approved the request following their discussion.
Alausa stated, “The rector mentioned that staff, students, and management have been praying and fasting for this transition. When I presented the matter to President Tinubu, he approved it without hesitation. We are now awaiting the official memo and necessary protocols to finalize the process.”
YABATECH Ready for University Status
Alausa commended YABATECH for its academic excellence, affirming that the institution is well-prepared for the upgrade.
“This institution is a legacy, boasting over 200 staff members with doctorate degrees. It is more than ready to become a university. Credit goes to the president, who is passionate about education and committed to empowering our youth,” he said.
The minister emphasized that this transformation aligns with Tinubu’s vision for advancing technical, vocational, and entrepreneurial education, a move aimed at reducing the mass migration of Nigerians seeking opportunities abroad.
“We are prioritizing artificial intelligence, robotics, coding, and other digital skills. If our youths excel in these fields, they can work remotely for global companies from Nigeria, earning foreign exchange. This will help curb the ‘Japa’ trend, where people travel abroad for menial jobs,” Alausa added.
Earlier, YABATECH’s Rector, Ibrahim Abdul, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to innovation.
“We don’t just want to be another university. We aim to become a center of excellence in technical and vocational education, driving innovation and solving real-world problems,” he said.
