In response to distress calls, the police traced the kidnappers to Kuje forest and Idu-Gwagwa hills, engaging in a shootout and successfully rescuing the four victims. This occurred within 48 hours of a separate incident where five Almajirai and two suspected members of Boko Haram died in an Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) explosion in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno.
The worsening security situation prompted a coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to call for the declaration of a state of emergency on kidnapping, terrorism, and other forms of criminality. The Inspector General of Police (IGP) reported significant achievements by the Special Intervention Squad (SIS), including the arrest of 139 kidnapping and armed robbery suspects, as well as the rescue of 154 victims in the FCT.
Additionally, the article discusses a separate incident in Borno where an IED planted by terrorists killed seven farmers and injured seven others on the Pulka/Firgi road. The use of IEDs by terrorist groups, particularly Boko Haram and ISWAP, has become more prevalent in their tactics.
Amidst growing concerns, CSOs are urging President Bola Tinubu to address the escalating insecurity, declare a state of emergency, and take decisive measures to combat kidnapping and terrorism. The CSOs also emphasized the need for the government to investigate the financial flow of organized criminal groups, identify sponsors, and prosecute those responsible. They called for a holistic approach, including addressing economic challenges, corruption, and human rights violations as contributing factors to Nigeria’s insecurity.
