Sources within the Assembly disclosed that the Appropriation Committees of both the Senate and the House of Representatives are expected to present their reports on the budget during plenary.
This move comes as funding for the extended implementation of the 2024 and 2025 budgets—especially ongoing capital projects carried over from previous fiscal years—is nearing its expiration.
According to insiders, the budget report is likely to be tabled once lawmakers resume sitting on Monday, with both chambers expected to deliberate on and approve it separately, either the same day or by Tuesday.
Lawmakers are reportedly keen to finalize the budget before embarking on their Easter break later in the week.
Sources also revealed that there is urgency within the Assembly to conclude work on the budget quickly, allowing members to shift focus to political consultations and re-election campaigns ahead of upcoming elections, following the release of the timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
One insider noted that the Appropriations Committees have been working intensively to ensure the report is ready in line with directives from Godswill Akpabio.
Prior to the recess, Akpabio had instructed the Senate Committee on Appropriation to fast-track work on the budget, emphasizing the need for immediate consideration upon resumption.
He stressed that unnecessary delays must be avoided to ensure the timely passage of the crucial national document.
Attempts to get official confirmation from the spokespersons of both chambers, Yemi Adaramodu and Akin Rotimi, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
However, sources within the Assembly remain confident that the 2026 budget will be passed before the Easter break.
