In a statement released on Friday, CAN, under the leadership of President Archbishop Daniel Okoh, expressed deep empathy for the widespread pain, anger, and frustration among Nigerians. While acknowledging the constitutional right to peaceful protest, CAN warned that such demonstrations could potentially be exploited by miscreants.
The statement highlighted the importance of upholding the right to peaceful assembly and protest as a fundamental democratic principle. However, it also noted the heightened risks associated with mass demonstrations, referencing past events like the #ENDSARS and #RevolutionNow protests, which experienced violence and destruction due to hijacking by disruptive elements.
CAN recommended considering other legal and non-disruptive methods for addressing grievances, such as dialogue, petitions, and town hall meetings. This approach, it suggested, might better prevent the potential for disorder and protect national assets and lives.
The statement also called on the government to reduce the cost of governance and address the opulent lifestyles of political office holders, which undermine public trust. Immediate actions to implement the newly approved national minimum wage, combat kidnappings, banditry, and mass killings, and improve economic policies were urged to provide relief and restore stability.
CAN emphasized the need for deeper consultations with stakeholders, including religious leaders, to create more effective and inclusive solutions. It closed with a call for peace, unity, and divine guidance during these challenging times, invoking the teachings of Jesus Christ about peacemakers.
