The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, reaffirmed on Tuesday that the military would not allow itself to be manipulated by any interest groups to disrupt democratic governance in Nigeria. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the COAS Combined 2nd and 3rd Quarters Conference in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Lagbaja emphasized that calls for military intervention were largely coming from young Nigerians who have no experience of the country’s extensive military rule. He assured that the Nigerian Army is committed to maintaining the “new prestige” it has built over the past 25 years and has no intention of undermining the nation’s democracy……CONTINUE READING
Lagbaja referenced the recent nationwide hunger protests, also known as the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests, as a crucial lesson, highlighting that food insecurity and hunger have the potential to escalate into significant crises. He pointed out that one of the issues raised during the protests was the call for undemocratic military intervention in governance. In response, Lagbaja stated, “The Nigerian Army will not allow itself to be used to undemocratically sail some interests to power.” He added that the Army, having faced the most backlash from previous military interventions, is determined to safeguard the prestige it has earned and continue its role in ensuring a secure and united nation.
Lagbaja noted that the Army would not only focus on physical security but would also address food and social security issues. He acknowledged that while the situation that led to the protests has settled, the underlying issue of food security remains a concern. To address this, the Nigerian Army plans to review its agricultural policy to boost crop production through the Nigerian Army Farms and Ranches Limited. This effort aims to release grains into the market at subsidized rates to support government initiatives.
The COAS also revealed plans to explore partnerships with government agencies and private organizations to tackle the food crisis in the country. He highlighted recent support from the national and sub-national governments, including the purchase of two BELL UH-1 Huey helicopters for various missions, and the acquisition of other combat equipment like Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles, rifles, and ammunition to enhance the Army’s operational capabilities.
Furthermore, Lagbaja reiterated the Army’s commitment to the welfare of widows and families of fallen heroes. Meanwhile, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno, who officially opened the conference, praised Lagbaja for his leadership and the Army’s ongoing innovations in competence and professionalism. Eno also pledged the state government’s support for the establishment of a proposed Army base and other logistical needs in the state.
