The protests, which began on August 1 and are scheduled to end on August 10, criticize the country’s economic hardships and governance issues.

Here is the full text of President Tinubu’s address:

“My fellow Nigerians,

1. Today, I address you with a heavy heart, acknowledging the unrest and violence affecting some of our states.

2. The protesters, primarily young Nigerians, have sought a more progressive nation where their hopes and dreams can be realized.

3. I am deeply saddened by the loss of lives in Borno, Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna, and other states, as well as the damage to public facilities and looting that has occurred. These acts of destruction undermine our nation and squander resources needed for recovery.

4. My condolences go out to the families of those who lost their lives in these protests. We must halt further violence and destruction.

5. As President, it is my duty to ensure public order. In fulfilling my constitutional promise to protect every citizen’s life and property, my administration will not tolerate attempts to destabilize the nation for political purposes.

6. I urge protesters and organizers to suspend further demonstrations and engage in dialogue. Nigeria needs unity and cooperation across all divides to shape our future. Those exploiting this situation to incite division will face legal consequences.

7. Democracy thrives when every Nigerian’s constitutional rights are upheld. Law enforcement must continue to protect innocent lives and property responsibly.

8. My vision for Nigeria is a just and prosperous nation where democratic governance ensures peace, freedom, and a meaningful livelihood for all.

9. For decades, our economy has struggled due to mismanagement. Recently, I made the tough decision to remove fuel subsidies and eliminate multiple foreign exchange systems to correct long-standing economic issues.

10. These measures are aimed at stopping corruption and smuggling while ending subsidies that harmed our economy. I am committed to delivering effective governance and improving the lives of our people.

11. In the past 14 months, we have made significant progress. Government revenues have doubled, and we are enhancing productivity in the non-oil sector.

12. We have reduced debt service from 97% to 68% of revenue and cleared about $5 billion in foreign exchange obligations, freeing up funds for social services.

13. Increased funding for education and healthcare has been provided, and we are making unprecedented investments in infrastructure projects.

14. Major infrastructure projects like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and Sokoto-Badagry Highway are underway, promising job creation and economic growth.

15. The oil and gas industry is recovering, with increased production and new foreign investments. We have also launched a Compressed Natural Gas Initiative to reduce transportation costs.

16. We are distributing conversion kits for vehicles and setting up conversion centers to support this initiative.

17. The student loan scheme has been launched, with substantial funds already processed. More support is available through the Consumer Credit Corporation and other programs.

18. Despite vandalism during protests, we are committed to empowering youth through various initiatives, including technical and digital job creation.

19. We are also expanding support for small businesses and improving housing infrastructure across the country.

20. Tariffs on essential goods are being removed to reduce prices, and efforts are being made to increase food production.

21. Our administration remains focused on addressing the concerns of the youth and building a better future for all Nigerians.

22. We must avoid violence and work together for a prosperous future. Our economy is recovering, and we must not let it falter.

23. Let us choose unity, progress, and democracy over division and stagnation. The safety and security of all Nigerians remain a top priority.

24. Thank you for your attention, and may God bless Nigeria.”
