According to multiple sources who spoke with Sahara Reporters, the proposed arrangement may prevent the accused officers from selecting their own legal counsel and also bar family members from attending the proceedings.
One source noted that the situation appears to go beyond delays in the judicial process, raising deeper concerns about transparency and fairness. The source suggested it could indicate an attempt to control the outcome and limit accountability.
Another insider expressed concern that trust in the process is diminishing, describing the situation as one that increasingly appears to prioritise control over justice.
The development comes amid growing public concern over the continued detention of several military officers accused of plotting to overthrow the government of President Bola Tinubu.
Although investigations into the alleged coup have been ongoing since 2025, no open trial has commenced, and details surrounding the allegations remain largely unclear.
Earlier in the month, wives of some of the detained officers staged a peaceful protest at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, calling for either the release of their husbands or a transparent and fair judicial process.
