The Congress of University Academics (CONUA) has called on President Bola Tinubu to take swift action to alleviate the severe hardship faced by Nigerians due to recent government reforms.
In a statement issued on Saturday, CONUA President Dr. ‘Niyi Sumonu highlighted the illegality of the federal government’s refusal to pay its members three months’ salary. This comes despite CONUA’s non-participation in the industrial action declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Dr. Sumonu stated, “Since the removal of fuel subsidy and the naira floating policies of the current administration, Nigerians have been experiencing significant hardship, necessitating urgent intervention.”
He further noted, “The Congress of University Academics (CONUA) has reviewed the state of the nation and observed the severe pain inflicted on Nigerians due to these policies since 29th May 2023. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has assured the nation that measures are being put in place to alleviate the suffering. CONUA urges the President to expedite these measures, particularly the announcement of a new minimum wage that will mitigate the impact of this hardship.”
The union also condemned the ongoing withholding of its members’ three months’ salary related to the 2022 ASUU strike. CONUA maintains that its members did not participate in the strike.
The statement continued, “CONUA calls the attention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) to the continued withholding of three and a half months’ salary due to the strike action by a sister academic union. CONUA has consistently stated that it never declared and did not participate in the strike.”
Dr. Sumonu emphasized, “The government unjustly lumped together those who participated in the strike with those who did not. This action is unfair and punishes the innocent alongside the guilty. This contravenes the judgment delivered on 25th July 2023 by the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN), which recognized CONUA as an independent union.”
He also cited Section 43 (1b) of the Trade Disputes Act CAP. T8, stating, “Withholding the salaries of CONUA members who did not participate in any strike contravenes this section, which entitles workers to wages during a lock-out period.”
Dr. Sumonu concluded by warning that failure to address this issue could lead to serious crises in universities, jeopardizing the current peace.
